Each project DesignGroup undertakes is significantly impacted by five major formgivers. To establish these comprehensive goals during the analysis state of the schematic design phase is imperative. Beyond satisfying the Owner's basic program, the success of the project can be judged on how well the project team responds to these formgivers.
program
Activity is the reason for architecture. The program defines the purpose of the project; and it organizes
the activities that fulfill this purpose. Summarize key components of the program, and illustrate important
spatial relationships that will drive the big idea.
image
The image of the project must fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the Owner. Establish a statement of
adjectives with the Owner and project team that describes characteristics of the desired image, before design
begins. Utilize this statement to establish form, context, materials, color, texture and light of the project.
site
Great architecture must respond to its place. Document and analyze the uniqueness of the site to fully understand
its orientation, topography, vegetation, access, surroundings, views, and infrastructure. Allow this understanding
to provide cues and determine forms of the project.
sustainability
Architecture conserves nature by proper orientation to the elements and artistic applications of technology.
Investigate and document the sustainable features of the project: Site, Landscape, Planning, Orientation, and
Materials. In a holistic manner, incorporate these findings to create a project that enhances the natural
processes, conserving resources of the Owner and Society.
constructability
The limits of resources and nature present great opportunity for innovation. Identify the Owner's resources,
including time and money, to establish design parameters. Confirm the budget and schedule in the context of the
other formgivers. Are the goals achievable and realistic? Establish appropriate building systems that consider
available resources and result in the honest use of materials. Allow the tectonics of architecture to add meaning
and form to the project.
